Sky Sketches

My Sky Sketches series is inspired by the Skies Sketchbook of English painter J. M. W. Turner, which was published in reproduction by the Tate Britain. The book contains quick watercolor sketches of various skies that the painter encountered in his travels. I was deeply moved by their blend of immediacy and ephemerality. So, in homage, I found a lined notebook, in the same A5 landscape format, and began recording my own 'sketches' of the sky in words.

I often write them to commemorate a specific site and date. For example, I wrote “Sky over rue des Beaux Arts – January 1 – 0h” for a show that was kicking off the new year at Galerie Arnaud Lefrebvre on the rue des Beaux Arts in Paris. I composed the text in situ, in front of the gallery, at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and read it aloud in the moment, before framing it to hang on the wall inside.
